Opinion: Leave those kids alone

Life was already exceedingly difficult for the students of Markham Middle School in South Los Angeles. Plagued by gang crime, the neighborhood has suffered from assaults and homicides. So it made sense that City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo used the school for a press event to showcase his plan to assign prosecutors to Markham and other besieged schools. The event might even have provided a welcome change of pace.

But that was Thursday. Now it’s getting old. Today, not to be outdone, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is going to Markham. To lead calisthenics. To underscore the the danger of obesity.

Markham has become the place to be seen. Presidential candidates, line up.
