The city of Maywood hasn’t always had its act together, and that’s especially true of its police department. The Times had an April 1 story on the shady history of some cops, followed up by an editorial that pegged the city as Exhibit A in the case for legislation to enhance police transparency. La Opinion has been following it for months. The LA Weekly is on the case of Cudahy, a neighboring city which shares the Maywood police. They must get a bit weary of hearing how wonderful the elite and reformed Los Angeles Police Department is under Chief William J. Bratton.

So Maywood elected officials and police leaders had a good time at last night’s City Council meeting, when they applauded their cops for the way they handled their May immigration rights march and rally. Mayor Sergio Calderon repeatedly praised the Maywood cops for the peaceful and professional way they protected and served the demonstrators. ‘I think they did a wonderful job,’ said Mayor Sergio Calderon. ‘Not like other police agencies.’
