As someone who lived in Santa Barbara during the latter days of the Reagan presidency, my enthusiasm for having the Western White House on the California coast knows no bounds. Secret service + hippies + grumpy national press blinking in the sunlight = nonstop opportunities for mirth. Alas, these visions are also turning into rank ‘80s nostalgia, since the closest we’ve had since then is Ron Burkle’s house during the first Clinton reign, and that just doesn’t quite cut it.

I’d pretty much given up hope until stumbling across this San Diego magazine ‘dialogue’ with prospective First Lady Cindy McCain, in which she reveals that -- who knew? -- the Straight-talkin’ family owns a home in San Diego’s Coronado Shores, ‘right next to the Hotel del Coronado.’

TB: [...] When the election’s over, do you think you might consider a Western White House in Coronado? CM: Absolutely. I love Coronado. Listen, to me there’s nothing better than waking up and seeing the sun come up over the water on the bay there. And watching the Navy SEALs run up and down the beach. And walking along the beach and then watching the sun set over Point Loma. That’s a great way to live.

I’m sure it is.

Any other good candidates for Western White Housedom? Does Mitt Romney keep a spare shelter near the Mormon Rocks? Maybe Ron Paul has his own private Irvine?
