Capitol staffers and Sacramento Democrats gathered at a local watering hole Wednesday night to remember Democratic staffer Bill Cavala, who died last month. Among those on hand to eulogize Cavala was Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Hillsborough), who worked the room of mostly Democratic staffers with the deftness of a politician who is running for something.

And she just might be. Speier acknowledged she was considering a run for attorney general, but hadn’t made a final decision. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Matier and Ross reported this week that a private poll showed Speier would be an immediate front-runner in the race.

The Democratic primary field is crowded, with three Assembly members, former Los Angeles City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo, San Francisco Dist. Atty. Kamala Harris and and Facebook CEO Chris Kelly.

Republicans in the race include Los Angeles Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley and Sen. Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach).
