News that Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Hillsborough) is considering running for attorney general has rippled through California political circles since last week. The first-term congresswoman and former state legislator could elbow her way into what would be a seven-person Democratic field, after the San Francisco Chronicle was leaked a private poll that showed she would be a strong contender for the job.

But since then, the state Capitol corridors have been filled with rumor and political innuendo – most notably that Speier has commissioned polls to test her chances in two other statewide races: insurance commissioner and lieutenant governor.

Patently false, said Jim Moore, who conducted the Speier-for-attorney-general survey.

“The only survey that we conducted was for the attorney general’s race,” Moore said. “There is only one poll.”
