Meg Whitman landed the first zinger of the debate saying that when Jerry Brown says he will unite people as governor, it will be ‘a meeting of all the special interests and the unions.’

Brown said he wasn’t going to reply to the TV-ad style attack, which he’s seen already “ad nauseum” on the airwaves.

The role of labor unions, which aired ads throughout the summer attacking Whitman, have become a point of contention in the campaign.
