In his interview with Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown on Tuesday, NBC’s Matt Lauer asked the two candidates if they would be willing to pull their negative ads for the final week of the campaign. Whitman said she wouldn’t. Now, Brown has turned that refusal into -- you guessed it -- a new campaign ad.

Of course, while Brown claims the high ground, his surrogates continue to attack Whitman’s record. Just Tuesday, the California Labor Federation launched an ad on cable stations statewide attacking Whitman’s refusal to vote for 28 years.

“Just moments after Jerry Brown committed to taking down his negative advertisements, one of the 30 different special interest groups that are attacking Meg on Brown’s behalf launched a new attack,’ said Whitman spokeswoman Andrea Jones Rivera on Wednesday. ‘Jerry Brown has been running a hard-hitting character assault on California’s airwaves for months, and the idea that he and his union attack groups would stop now is absurd.”

Whitman launched a new positive spot Wednesday saying the state’s ‘problems are tough, but so am I.’
