The race for Oakland mayor is finally over, more than one week after Election Day. Oakland city councilwoman Jean Quan has bested former state Senate President Don Perata for the post.

Perata received the most first-place votes in the election. But Oakland has an ‘instant-runoff’ voting system that allows voters to rank their top-three choices.

Quan overtook Perata on the strength of the second and third-place votes she received. After the votes were tallied, Quan had 51% of the vote to Perata’s 49%.
