If the words ‘TV musical’ conjure up visions of ‘Cop Rock’ or ‘Viva Laughlin,’ we are here to tell you that a new genre is being invented as we speak.

TV scribe-producer Ryan Murphy of ‘Nip Tuck’ and ‘Popular’ has created a new one-hour comedy musical for Fox that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen on television. The network is so excited about it that, even though the series won’t air until fall, Fox is showing the pilot on May 19 after the ‘American Idol’ finale.

The series stars Matthew Morrison (‘Hairspray’) as a high school teacher who reinvents the glee club and challenges a gang of misfits (Lea Michele of ‘Spring Awakening’ among them!) to be the best they can be. The music is all top 40 hits from the past and present, from Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ to Amy Winehouse’s ‘Rehab.’

Here’s a brand new trailer released by Fox this afternoon.
