Fred Willard, better known for his zany improvisational skills with roles in films such as ‘Best in Show,’ ‘A Mighty Wind’ and ‘For Your Consideration,’ is the latest guest star to join the family on ABC’s hit comedy ‘Modern Family.’

Continuing with already more-than-perfect casting decisions, the 70-year-old will play Phil Dunphy’s (Ty Burrell) father, ABC confirmed to Show Tracker today.

Burrell let the cat out of the bag in an interview with Fancast.

‘Fred is not just a pioneer for this type of comedy but somebody who has really set the tone for how it can be done, so it was just a total honor,’ Burrell said in the interview. ‘He really established, even going back to ‘Spinal Tap,’ some of the funniest stuff out of the medium.’

Willard will appear on a holiday-themed episode airing Dec. 9.

‘Modern Family’ airs tonight at 9 on ABC, with guest appearances from actors Edward Norton and Elizabeth Banks. Until then fans can read the exclusive interview with Eric Stonestreet.
