KNBC-TV Channel 4 news director Steve Lange, who has only been at the station for about three months, resigned Tuesday, just a few weeks after coming under criticism for focusing on entertainment elements during newscasts.

Station executives said that Lange, who had replaced retiring news director Robert Long, had decided to return to his independent production company.

‘After a great deal of consideration, I have decided to return to the full-time management of my independent production company, Steve Lange Productions,’ Lange, who also had the title of vice president of content, said in a statement to staffers. ‘Although I have been with you for only a short time, I want you to know how much I appreciate your work and tireless dedication.’

Susan Tully, whom executives called ‘an experienced journalist and news leader from our Dallas station,’ will serve as interim news director until a permanent replacement is named.
