About (Late) Last Night: Gwyneth Paltrow keeps mostly quiet on ‘Conan’

Gwyneth Paltrow is good with the occasional surprise, though they’re quite infrequent. Fresh off of receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Paltrow stopped by ‘Conan’ as part of her publicity push for the forthcoming ‘Country Strong,’ in which she plays an aging country music star. As the prep school-bred child of actors, perhaps Paltrow picked up some of the Southern sass from her role, but only a smidgen.

‘That takes cojones to do that,’ said O’Brien of Paltrow’s live performance of the film’s title number at the Country Music Awards.

‘Yeah, I strapped them up between my butt cheeks before,’ said Paltrow. ‘I don’t like when they show in the dress.’

Conan shook his head wildly twice and ran his fingers through his hair to regain his composure. In doing so, he stood in for the at-home audience, doubtlessly caught off guard by the otherwise perfectly staid Paltrow.

After the crude joke, Paltrow fell right back into place, discussing her vocal exercises, her marriage and the holidays. If she was excited to be there, she didn’t show it, though Conan’s gags elicited a few brief laughs. It was as if she had a shell made of super-fame.

The only other wild card Paltrow played was admitting she owned a deep fryer, despite her penchant for healthy food. ‘You could fry a cockroach in batter and basically I would eat it,’ she said. Again surprising, but it’s all relative.
