Proving that being “Awkward” has its benefits, MTV picked up the half-hour scripted series for a second season.
The 12-episode sophomore season will air next year.
“ ‘Awkward’ has really resonated with our young audience marking yet another successful push into scripted programming and the further diversification of our schedule,” said David Janollari, head of MTV programming, in a statement. “Lauren Iungerich has created a truly unique, contemporary young female voice, brought to life by the show’s incredibly talented cast.”
The series, created by Iungerich, centers on a 15-year-old awkwardly trying to navigate her high school years. It premiered July 19 to 1.7 million viewers; its most recent episode drew 1.9 million.
The renewal comes on the heels of MTV’s announcement that it had canceled “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” after two seasons.
“Awkward” currently airs Tuesdays at 11 p.m. on the network. There are seven episodes left until its finale.
