Ultimate Fighting Championship spokeswoman Rachel Trontel just told me her organization has scheduled a Dec. 10 fight card at a venue near Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The fights will be televised by Spike TV, which also will stage a telethon to draw donations from viewers for U.S. troops.

UFC held a similar event in 2006 at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, with a card highlighted by Diego Sanchez’s domination of Joe Riggs. Military personnel packed a hangar, swilling beers and enjoying an Everyman’s life for a few hours as the specter of a deployment to Iraq hung over everyone inside.

The Miramar event was an entertaining way to say ‘thank you’ to troops and is well worth repeating for the troops at Fort Bragg.
