The Boston Red Sox say they essentially gave Manny Ramirez a 10-year deal and got burned.

So they’ve learned from that. No more 10-year deals, not even for the most coveted free agent remaining, Mark Teixeira.

‘The Red Sox effectively had a 10-year deal with a player determined not to live up to his contract,’’ Red Sox owner John Henry told the Boston Herald in an e-mail. ‘A lot can change over 10 years, for both sides.’

Teixeira reportedly has eight-year offers from the Angels, Red Sox and Washington Nationals and a seven-year offer from the Baltimore Orioles.

The Baltimore Sun reported today that the Orioles would be willing to offer a longer deal.
