Height notwithstanding, these two stood tall at the 2008 L.A. Sports Awards on Friday night. At left is jockey Rafael Bejarano, who recorded the most winners at each of Southern California’s major meets in 2008 -- a feat that was nominated as one of the greatest sports moments. With him is Phil Jackson, coach of the Lakers.

Times sports editor Randy Harvey posted Friday night the top 10 L.A. sports moments of 2008, as selected by the L.A. Sports Council. The No. 1 moment turned out to be the Dodgers’ acquisition of home run hitter Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox.

The Lakers had a few nominations. Kobe Bryant being named the league’s MVP was No. 2, and his team’s return to the NBA Finals was the No. 4 moment of 2008.

And Adam Rose, on The Times’ ‘What’s Bruin’ blog today, talks about the No. 6 moment: the Bruins’ third straight trip to the NCAA Final Four in men’s basketball.

Yet in an online poll for Bruins fans, the top UCLA moment, Rose writes, was not Ben Howland‘s team but the school’s winning three NCAA championships in one month: women’s water polo, women’s tennis and men’s golf.
