The Brock Lesnar-Frank Mir heavyweight Ultimate Fighting Championship’s title fight scheduled for May 23 in Las Vegas has been replaced by a main-event light-heavyweight title fight between champion Rashad Evans and surprise unbeaten challenger Lyoto Machida.

Mir has suffered a reported knee injury, and Evans’ expected challenger for UFC 100, Irvine’s Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, has suffered ligament damage in his jaw that will require surgery so he’s unable to immediately get a chance to reclaim the belt he lost to Forrest Griffin last year.

The just-posted UFC announcement said Mir had bone chips in his knee that required surgery. The Mir-Lesnar fight is scheduled to serve as the main event of UFC 100 in Las Vegas in July.

Jackson, meanwhile, was supposed to have earned the title shot at Evans after defeating Keith Jardine by decision Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.

The UFC announced Jackson will now fight the winner of the two unbeatens, Evans (18-0-1) and Machida (14-0).

The UFC 98 card at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand also features a welterweight battle between former champs Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.
