USC football Coach Pete Carroll wants comedian Will Ferrell to join the bandwagon.

No, not the Trojan one -- Ferrell is already a USC alum and die-hard fan.

Carroll is active on Twitter, a social networking site that -- at least for the next 20 minutes -- is hotter than Facebook and way cooler than Myspace. He’s launching a campaign to get Ferrell to join him.

Looking for some more celebrity support, Carrol tweeted Shaquille O’Neal this morning, saying: ‘We need a little love to get Will Ferrell on Twitter ... can you help us out?’ and he included an e-mail address created to collect fan mail encouraging Ferrell to join (wewantwillferrellontwitter@gmail.com).

After reading this far, you’re either amused or confused -- there is no middle ground.

For those still stuck in 2007, Twitter is simply a running list of status updates. Users are limited to 140 characters to answer the simple question, ‘What are you doing?’ The style is also known as a micro-blog.

Twitter members can become a ‘follower’ of other members and will receive updates about their status on a home page.

You following me, camera guy?

Messages (known on the site as ‘tweets’) also can be sent between two members, visible to either the public (like Carroll’s plea to Shaq) or just the two users.

Statistically, Facebook remains the top social networking site. People using both services can have their tweets automatically added to their Facebook profile as a status update. Facebook recently attempted to purchase Twitter. That fell through, but Facebook’s recent redesign feels a lot like their upstart competitor.
