Many Ducks fans were unhappy when Fox picked up the broadcast from San Jose on Sunday, which meant the Versus broadcast was blacked out. This made a huge difference because it meant local Ducks fans couldn’t watch the Versus high definition (HD) version and were forced into watching the game without benefit of high definition.

Fox spokeswoman Whitney Garvens explained the situation this way: Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket are limited in the number of HD paths available from a Fox control facility in Houston. All the regional Fox Sports channels use those paths, and those paths are crowded now with the NHL and NBA playoffs and the start of the baseball season going on.

Tonight’s game from Anaheim is on Versus, but Thursday’s Game 4 is on Fox. Garvens said that game broadcast has been cleared to receive a HD path.

When Fox picks up the Ducks, it’s blacked on Versus even for those who receive their sports via satellite networks like DirecTV or the Dish Network.
