Schmidt walks two, allows no runs in top of fourth

With two men on in the bottom of the third, Dodgers starting pitcher Jason Schmidt hit a line drive up the middle, but Jerry Hairston ranged to his right to snag it and end the inning. Schmidt faces Edwin Encarnacion, Chris Dickerson and Ryan Hanigan in the top of the fourth. All are 0-for-1, Hanigan reaching after being hit with a pitch.

Schmidt walks Encarnacion. One on, no out, with Dickerson at the plate. Schmidt walks Dickerson on four straight pitche. Pitching coach Rick Honeycutt visits the mound and there’s movement in the Dodgers bullpen.

Schmidt strikes out Hanigan with a slow outside breaking ball. Men on first and second, one out.

Pitcher Micah Owings pops out to first for the second out as the top of the order comes up again.

Willy Taveras flies out to center to end the inning, stranding two runners. The Dodgers still lead, 6-3, heading to the bottom of the fourth. Since the first inning, where he gave up three hits, Schmidt has not allowed a hit, though he has walked two and hit a batter. He’s thrown 79 pitches through four innings.
