Dodgers starting pitcher Jason Schmidt faces Jerry Hairston, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips in the top of the fifth. Hairston hit the ball hard, but Matt Kemp tracked it down in center for the first out.

Votto also hits it hard, but also hits it right at Kemp, who catches it for the second out.

Phillips shot a grounder through the hole into right field for a single. One on, two outs.

Schmidt started Laynce Nix off with a 69-mph curve outside for a strike, then came back inside with a fastball. Nix popped a fastball up to second base to end the inning.

Schmidt has now allowed one hit in four innings, and the Dodgers still lead, 6-3.
