Pennetta defeats Sharapova in L.A. Women’s Tennis semifinal

Flavia Pennetta defeated Maria Sharapova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, in a L.A. Women’s Tennis Championships semifinal Saturday night at Home Depot Center.

Pennetta, the runner-up in last year’s tournament, is seeded 10th and will play Samantha Stosur for the title on Sunday. Stosur defeated Sorana Cirstea in an earlier semifinal, 6-3, 6-2.

In 2005, Sharapova earned the world’s No. 1 ranking during the tournament. She has never won the title in Carson though.
