The Dodgers placed Jason Schmidt on the 60-day disabled list today to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for recently acquired Vicente Padilla, a move that most likely signaled the end of Schmidt’s 14-year major-league career.

Tony Abreu was optioned to triple-A Albuquerque to open a place on the active roster for Padilla, who will make his first start with the Dodgers today.
