Charlie Davies, a starting forward on the U.S. men’s national soccer team, was released from a Washington hospital today, one month after suffering serious injuries in an automobile accident.
Davies, 23, underwent several surgeries at Washington Hospital Center and was later transferred to National Rehabilitation Hospital to begin recovery.
‘I would like to take the time to thank everyone who has dealt with me in the Hospital Center and NRH for really putting in the time to help me get better as a person and as an athlete,’ Davies said in a statement released on his behalf.
‘I continue to improve every day, and I look forward to getting back on my feet and attacking rehabilitation.’
The cause of the single-vehicle accident on the George Washington Parkway, in which one woman was killed and another injured, remains under investigation. Attorneys for Davies have instructed the player ‘not to discuss this matter with the media until the investigation is complete, and then only in the presence of counsel.’
Davies, who was not the driver of the vehicle, suffered multiple fractures to his right leg, facial fractures, a broken left elbow and a lacerated bladder in the early-morning accident.
Meanwhile, James DeBritz, the director of orthopaedic trauma at Washington Hospital Center, said Davies faces ‘a long recovery’ but that ‘his overall health, age and positive attitude should help him to have a good outcome.’
