Veteran baseball beat writer and columnist Bill Madden of the New York Daily News has been elected to the writers’ wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in a vote of his peers in the Baseball Writers Assn. of America.

Madden received support on 226 of the 452 ballots cast by 10-year members of the BBWAA, becoming the 61st winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, which recognizes ‘meritorious contributions to baseball writing’ and carries with it induction into the Hall. Previous winners have included the Times’ Jim Murray and Ross Newhan, and the late Bob Hunter, who was with the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.

Madden joined the Daily News as the Yankees beat writer in 1978 after nine years with United Press International. The author of four books on baseball, Madden has covered 35 World Series.
