In perhaps a sign of things to come, Josh Hill rallied to pass James Stewart to win the first AMA Supercross heat race tonight at Angel Stadium.

Stewart, the reigning Supercross Series champion, finished second. He skipped the rider introductions, saying he needed time and rest to nurse his injuries, but showed no ill-effects in his heat race. He swapped the lead with Austin Stroupe over the first three laps of the race. Stewart took over the lead on the third lap.

But Hill, Stewart’s teammate, rallied from eighth place to take the lead on Lap 6 and held on to it for the last three laps of the race.

Andrew Short was third, followed by Stroupe in fourth and Thomas Kahn in fifth.
