Now this is a way to spice up the weekly UCLA basketball news conferences. Bring in the golfers!

Bruins basketball coach Ben Howland has invited U.S. Ryder Cup captain and UCLA alum Corey Pavin to the weekly talk fest at the J.D. Morgan Center. Pavin was the NCAA Player of the Year in 1982 at UCLA and twice a winner at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club which is, coincidentally, beginning Thursday.

Will Pavin offer tips on the square grooves or the zone defense? On how to hit the driver straight down the fairway or how to shoot three-pointers straight into the basket? Howland doesn’t usually have guest speakers, but maybe listening to Pavin will be a nice change of pace for the local media.

What more can the players say about the so-far mediocre season? And here’s an idea for any scheduled media offerings by Stanford University’s basketball team. Isn’t Tiger Woods a Stanford guy? Now that would boost attendance at a weekly media gathering.
