LPGA event at La Costa gets a sponsor and Michelle Wie

Kia Motors America announced Wednesday that it had an endorsement deal with golfer Michelle Wie and had agreed to become the title sponsor of the upcoming LPGA tournament to be held in March at La Costa.

The tournament will be known as the Kia Classic Presented by J Golf. It will be from March 22 to 28 at La Costa Resort and Spa, with prize money of $1.7 million.

That’s good news for a tour that saw its purses drop last year about $5 million from 2008 because of the loss of three tournaments.
