Bryan brothers make history at Farmers Classic

Twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan from Camarillo won their sixth Farmers Classic men’s doubles title Sunday, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 10-7, over Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherland Antilles. But that wasn’t the big deal.

In their 100th final, the Bryans won their 62nd title, a new record in men’s tennis. The Bryans had been trying since last spring to move past Hall of Famers Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge for most ever men’s doubles titles.

Woodforde was in attendance and gave hugs and handshakes to the two guys who took away the record Woodforde and Woodbridge had held for a decade.

Bob Bryan said, ‘It means everything to us, and to have Mark here is awesome. Mark and Todd didn’t have the power and the big serves, but their poaching ability was great, and their technique was flawless.’

Mike Bryan said that a few years ago setting this record seemed impossible. ‘The Woodies put a record way out there.’ Mike said. ‘Sixty-one was Mt. Everest when we started out.’

Woodforde was gracious to the brothers who broke his record. ‘For many, many years you’ve been traveling in elite company,’ Woodforde said. ‘With the victory today, you’re in rarefied air. You stand alone as one. I know you two can continue for years ... so 70, 80, quite possibly 100 [are] to come.’

They Bryans dedicated their victory to the late Jack Kramer, who would have been 89 on Sunday. Jack died of cancer last September. His son Bob Kramer is the Farmers Classic tournament director.
