Brandon Wood earns player of the week honors ... in the Arizona Fall League

Big-league pitching befuddled Brandon Wood all season, but the Angels infielder has had little trouble adjusting to pitching in the Arizona Fall League.

Wood, who struggled so much with the Angels that he lost his third-base job in July, earned AFL co-player of the week honors by hitting .444 (8 for 18) with eight runs batted in and a double in his first week for the Mesa Solar Sox.

Wood, who hit .146 with four home runs, 14 RBIs, 71 strikeouts and six walks in 226 at-bats with the Angels, had the biggest week of the AFL’s opening week, a two-out, bases-loaded, three-run, walk-off double in the bottom of the 11th inning with his team trailing by two runs.

Two other Angels prospects who spent September in the big leagues have begun play in the Venezuelan winter league. Catcher Hank Conger hit .273 with two doubles and an RBI in his first four games, and first baseman Mark Trumbo hit .250 with two solo homers in his first six games.
