The Kings’ progress has often been compared to the steps taken by the Chicago Blackhawks in building a team that won the Stanley Cup last season.
Years of poor performances produced prime draft picks, and good management filled in holes that homegrown players couldn’t plug. It all came together for the Blackhawks last season after a 49-year wait, bringing new life to a franchise that had become almost irrelevant.
The Kings have been touted as a potential successor to the Blackhawks because they’ve followed the same methods and competitive path. But the Blackhawks showed Wednesday that they’re not ready to concede their title to anyone just yet.
Goaltender Marty Turco, signed as a free agent after salary cap problems forced the Blackhawks to start over in net, stopped 33 shots by the Kings, 15 of them in the third period, to preserve a 3-1 victory before a crowd of 20,667 at the United Center.
The loss left the Kings 2-2 on their five-game trip, with only Thursday’s finale at Dallas remaining on their itinerary. Goalie Jonathan Bernier stopped 25 shots. Jonathan Quick is scheduled to start Thursday against the Stars.

Justin Williams scored the only goal for the Kings (6-3-0).

The Blackhawks (6-4-1) lost winger Marian Hossa to an undisclosed injury in the second period.
