It became clear, very quickly, that Kings’ left wing Simon Gagne was going to be out for some time when he sustained a concussion against Phoenix on Dec. 26.

Unfortunately for Gagne, nothing has emerged to change that initial impression.

At Monday’s morning skate, Kings Coach Darryl Sutter talked about Gagne. Sutter showed a glimpse of openness, using the word ‘concussion’ to describe Gagne’s injury. The team previously opted to use the phrase ‘upper-body injury’ in relation to head injuries.

‘Players like Gagne that have had a history of it, then it becomes even more of an issue,’ Sutter said. ‘There’s no way of telling. I really believe one of the worst things you can do is keep asking him about it. It’s a negative.

‘A lot of it is just feeling better about yourself and then you feel better. On lower scale, it’s like somebody that’s got the flu and you keep asking them how they’re feeling.’

Gagne was put on injured-reserve last week and this will be the fourth game he has missed because of the concussion. Sutter said that Gagne would see the doctor at some point tonight during the game against the Avalanche at Staples Center.

Additionally, defenseman Slava Voynov, who has 10 points in 24 games, won’t play against Colorado.

‘He got banged up,’ Sutter said. ‘He got hit two games in a row.’
