Super Bowl XLVI between the New York Giants and New England Patriots kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time today.

At last glance, the Patriots, who finished 13-3 to earn the AFC’s top seeding in the conference playoffs, were a 2 1/2-point favorite.

Nobody is quite sure why, although quarterback Tom Brady and Coach Bill Belichick are 3-1 in Super Bowls and are the only QB/coach combination to appear in five Super Bowls.

Experts and fans seem solidly behind the Giants, who came together late in the season when their defensive line returned to health and Eli Manning looked like the elite quarterback he claimed to be at the start of the season.

Manning guided New York to a handful of fourth-quarter comebacks, including three late in the season when they qualified for the playoffs as NFC East champions with a 9-7 record.
