Major cellular providers are rolling out 4G services, touting them as the next big jump in network technology.

With 4G (fourth generation) service, new smart phones are expected to get even more powerful, allowing users to watch live, high-definition TV broadcasts, download entire movies in seconds and make smooth, uninterrupted video phone calls no matter where you are.

But that’s the promise. For all its potential it’s far from taking off, notes David Sarno in a Times article that provides a primer on 4G -- what it is and where it’s at.
