YouTube today announced YouTube trends -- which is similar to Google Trends, but for keeping track of what is popular on YouTube instead of what people are searching for on Google.
By the way, Google owns YouTube.
YouTube Trends will be a ‘destination for daily insight into the zeitgeist of the world’s largest video site,’ wrote Kevin Allocca, YouTube Trends manager, in a blog post.
‘With over 35 hours of video now uploaded to YouTube every minute, we wanted one place to distill the videos people were sharing and discussing with their friends,’ Allocca said.
What you can find on YouTube Trends, according to Allocca:
- New algorithmically generated feeds highlighting trending videos and topics.
- A collection of videos called ‘4 at 4,’ delivered twice a day, which will offer four popular videos drawn from the feeds of trending videos and topics.
- A blog with ‘more in-depth and contextual explorations of videos, trends and cultural phenomenon as seen through the lens of YouTube.’
- A YouTube Trends ‘dashboard’ that will allow viewers to quickly explore what’s popular among various demographic sets (such as age and gender), as well as in various cities in the U.S. and around the world.
- ‘Billboard-style’ charts, data graphs and visualisations depicting what is trending and where.
YouTube Trends has already collected a few lists of top videos for 2010 on its blog, such as YouTube’s Top Movie Trailers of 2010 and YouTube’s Top News & Politics Videos of 2010.
