News Corp.’s iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, delayed, reports say

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. is delaying the launch of the first iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, according to the Associated Press.

An unnamed source told the AP that both News Corp. and Apple are holding back the official debut of The Daily while technical details dealing with subscriptions are being finalized.


The source told the AP the process will take ‘weeks and not months.’ A formal unveiling for The Daily was previously set for Jan. 19, according to the AP.

The Wall Street Journal, also owned by News Corp., has reported on the delay as well (link requires registration).

The Daily has its own newsroom staff across the U.S. and will be much like a national newspaper, but it won’t be in print or even online -- just on the iPad. General news, culture and entertainment will be covered, and the digital paper will also have embedded video, the AP said.

The publishing industry -- newspapers, magazines and books -- has been eyeing the iPad and other tablet computer platforms, such as Google Android tablets, as a possible revenue stream to help fill in some of the losses from declining sales and subscriptions of print products.

The first such iPad-only publication was Richard Branson’s Project Magazine, which will soon make its way to the iPhone and later to Android devices.

Sales of magazines on the iPad started off strong but softened dramatically, failing to sustain consistent readership levels.
