The Japan earthquake and tsunami, which has left hundreds dead, has dominated the trending charts on Twitter much of Friday morning.

As of about 11:30 a.m. PST, #PrayforJapan, #tsunami, #japon and Text REDCROSS were the top four trending topics worldwide on Twitter.

For #PrayforJapan, the No. 1 world trending topic as of this writing, the most popular tweet (in terms of users re-tweeting the message on to their followers) was from a user that may or may not be Dave Chappelle, the actor who had a huge run with his ‘Chappelle’s Show’ TV series which ran on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2006.

Chappelle hasn’t been on TV since 2006, except for an interview with Oprah, and later Anderson Cooper, in which he gave an explanation as to why he quit his hit show and passed up a $50-million contract, citing a loss of creative control and an increasingly uncomfortable workplace.

The comedian still does stand-up from time to time, and the tweet from the @davechappelle accounbt seems to have struck a chord with Twitter users. Sent about 12 hours ago, it says:

#prayforjapan times like this we gotta stick together, real talk. God bless everyone affected by the earthquake & #tsunami
