If you have cash to spare, gone are the days when your dog or child can caper off without your knowledge.

The Garmin GTU 10 Tracker -- for sale online and at select AT&T stores -- is a GPS device that can be clipped onto a dog collar, tucked into a child’s backpack or put into a car trunk, and then tracked either online or through a smartphone app.

Using the AT&T wireless network, the tracker also allows parents and paranoid pet owners to create up to 10 virtual fences around such locales as a school, a home or a backyard. An email or text message notifies you every time the gadget enters or leaves a ‘geofenced’ area, when presumably you’ll rush to the rescue and coax the kid/puppy back into safety.

‘Whether you’re keeping an eye on your young children this summer, your pets or your property, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you can easily and affordably track the locations of the things that matter most to you,’ Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales, said in an AT&T press release.

The price? A whopping $199.99.

AT&T is sweetening the deal by throwing in one year of ‘standard tracking,’ which enables subscribers to view the last 10 known locations the device traversed every day.

Those channeling their inner private eye can spring for the deluxe tracking plan -- at $4.99 per month, or $59.88 a year -- which can access the last seven days of tracking history.

Unfortunately, nothing will keep your kid from ditching the gadget in a corner and shimmying down the storm drain.
