A man and 48 buddies started a viral sensation in China after dancing in giant carrot costumes before getting down on one knee and proposing marriage to his girlfriend.

The lovestruck fellow pulled the stunt in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao on the qixi holiday, sometimes referred to as China’s Valentine’s Day, in front of a crowd of amazed onlookers.

The entire stunt was caught on video and broadcast on Liaoning TV, according to local media reports, which identified the man as Pan Kun.

Chinese Internet users quickly dubbed Kun ‘the Carrot Brother.’ On Tuesday, ‘Carrot Brother marriage proposal’ was the sixth-most-popular search term on Baidu, China’s top search engine. It’s a curious twist considering that just months before, censors had blocked some searches for the word ‘carrot’ (pronounced hu) because it is the same as President Hu Jintao’s surname.

The video shows Kun’s girlfriend, in a red dress and black heels, walking around the square unawares while a platoon of carrots sporting sunglasses boogied into Aofan Square to the theme song of a local dating show called ‘If You Are the One.’

Minutes later, Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed a Girl’ blasted over loudspeakers while Kun started reminiscing inside his carrot.

“I met you for the first time six months ago,” Kun declared in Chinese. “It’s still crystal clear in my mind -– your bashfulness during our first dinner date, the way I felt when I saw you to your apartment door, the way you trembled when I reached to hold your hand when we went to the movies for the first time.”

Kun then shed his costume and got down on one knee, while the crowd erupted and began chanting: ‘Marry him! Marry him!’

His embarrassed-looking girlfriend said yes.

The entire performance took approximately 100,000 yuan (around $15,000) and three weeks to plan, according to local reports.
