Mark Webster, 22, a black man, was shot through the abdomen near the intersection of 2nd Avenue and West 54th Street in South Los Angeles and died at 4:35 a.m. Sunday, April 15.

Webster walked outside a biker club on this commercial stretch in LAPD’s 77th Street precinct area. Someone was lying in wait at a distance; the shooter took aim, fired, and hit him. Webster was with a companion who also was shot and wounded. Paramedics took them to Cedars-Sinai hospital , where Webster died. His companion is expected to recover. There had been a gang shooting in the area a few days before, and investigators suspect the shooters sought retaliation, though Webster was not a gang member and may just have been a convenient target.
