David Silva, a 21-year-old Latino man, was struck in the shoulder by a bullet in the 2900 block of Nielson Way in Santa Monica and died at 2:11 a.m. Saturday, July 7.

Silva was with three or four friends, all Latino young men, in the Mor Bar in Santa Monica at about 1:40 a.m. when an argument broke out with another group of young men. Police said some gang rivalry issues may have fueled the quarrel. Neither Silva nor his friends were from Santa Monica. There have been conflicting accounts from law enforcement on whether the suspects in this case are black or Latino.

Both groups went out into the street and walked away from each other. Silva and his friends were heading toward a parking lot when the other group pulled up in a silver or blue compact 4-door car and opened fire. Silva’s friends took him to a Westside hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Santa Monica police continue their investigation and are looking for witnesses. Silva’s friends have not been cooperative, said Santa Monica Police Lt. Alex Padilla. Anyone with information is asked to call Santa Monica police at (310) 458-8427 (24 hours) or detectives at (310) 458-8451.
