Almost 1,000 union members gathered in a Detroit labor hall Saturday to hear Hillary Clinton make her pitch for her presidential candidacy. The event didn’t get wide national coverage, but Times’ opinion columnist Ron Brownstein was there and he found it illuminating.

In both Clinton’s performance and the reactions of those who chatted about it afterward, Ron saw the disparate characteristics that, in his view, explain her frontrunning status in the Democratic race and loom as the obstacles that could trip her up.
