During the mulitiple-candidate stage of political campaigns, one-on-one skirmishes often break out. Such has been the case in the GOP race of late, with John McCain and Mitt Romney targeting one another for attack. And they were at it again today.

The McCain camp began the fight. In a news release, it sought to spotlight what many continue to see as Romney’s Achilles heel --- his shifting view on social issues, particularly abortion. Matt David, McCain’s deputy communications director, laid it on the line: ‘Mitt Romney’s biggest challenge in this election will be convincing Republicans he has principled positions on important issues, especially now that it’s known that he remained committed to pro-choice policies after his ‘epiphany’ on abortion in 2004.’

To make its case that, in essence, Romney is a hypocrite for claiming that he changed his position on abortion in 2004, they provided a video clip from 2005.

The Romney camp fired back several times during the day, ultimately sending out a video clip of the former Massachusetts governor responding to the McCain campaign during an interview on Michael Medved’s radio show.

Romney will get the chance to discuss his position on abortion in detail this Friday --- he’ll be appearing at the National Right to Life Conference in Kansas. There could be some fireworks there, too; also dropping by is another GOP presidential contender, Sam Brownback, who recently criticized Romney for refusing to describe abortion as murder.
