As prominent Democrats trumpeted their outrage Monday night over President Bush’s communtation of ‘Scooter’ Libby’s prison sentence, one of the more creative responses came from Joe Biden.

Through his presidential campaign committee, the senator from Delaware sent out an e-mail that, along with blasting Bush, urged like-minded folks to take action.

How? Here it is, straight from the release: ‘I call for all Americans to flood the White House with phone calls tomorrow expressing their outrage over this blatant disregard for the rule of law.’

He then provided the general phone number at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. --- once in bold-face, a second time in red ink underneath a picture of Libby, the former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney.

Well, The Times’ James Gerstenzang checked in with White House operators today, and they reported no noticeable difference in call volume. And we’re betting they were happy it was Biden’s campaign --- and not that of Barack Obama’s, with its much-touted list of 250,000 donors --- that came up with the idea.

Since we’re not exactly revealing state secrets, here’s that number: 202-456-1414. Just for future reference.

By the way, you can express your own opinion on the prison commutation by going here and voting.
