Opinion: Toy story (through a Democratic prism)

With holiday shopping season upon us, it’s no surprise that toys figured in today’s radio-only debate in Iowa among the Democratic presidential contenders.

The discussion, initially, concerned safety problems that have plagued toys made in China. But ultimately, the topic provided Chris Dodd yet another opportunity to pledge his fealty to all things Iowan.

After John Edwards had broached the toy-safety issue, questioner Michele Norris, noting that Edwards has two small children, asked if he would be placing Chinese-manufactured toys under the family Christmas tree in a few weeks.

‘No, ma’am, I will not,’ he responded. ‘.... My kids will not have toys coming from China.’

Dodd also has two small children -- tots whom, along with his wife, he has temporarily relocated to the Hawkeye State. So, understandably, he had something to interject.

‘My toys are coming from Iowa,’ he said. ‘I’m buying Iowa toys. They [his wife and daughters] are going to eat Iowa food. Iowa toys.’

His comments sparked laughter. But we’re not sure he’s was kidding.
