Opinion: Dispatch from Ojai: ‘Happy new country!’

Our sister blog L.A. Now has a great post on a inauguration-watch gathering in Ojai. Times staff writer Catherine Saillant was there to record the details:

At Ojai’s only movie theater, the morning’s events played like a vaudevillian hit, complete with heroes, villains and a few botched lines.

The standing-room-only crowd hissed and booed when President Bush appeared on the screen. ‘Bye!’ shouted one person in the audience. Catcalls grew even louder as Vice President Dick Cheney was wheeled to his position on the stand.

‘Give him 20 years in San Quentin!’ shouted another man.

And when Barack Obama completed his swearing-in — with a few misspoken lines — audience members erupted into a rowdy, foot-stomping standing ovation.

‘Happy new country!’ beamed an exultant Meg Easling, 64, hugging friends and neighbors.
