Opinion: Edwin T. Snell launches recall of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger, meet Edwin T. Snell.

His campaign skills may not be as slick or well-funded as the governor’s. But the San Bernardino County resident has garnered the 50 necessary signatures for a notice of intent to circulate a recall petition against the governor.

That announcement came today from California Secretary of State Debra Bowen.

According to Snell’s filing with the state, complete with errors in grammar and punctuation, “Arnold Schwarzenegger does no longer represent the interest of the people and has betrayed the trust of the voters. Schwarzenegger initiatives on prisons, water and the environment has been a complete disaster.”

Schwarzenegger, elected in the Gray Davis recall of 2003, was the target of a recall attempt by prison guards last year. But the guards dropped the effort. Now the governor has until Monday to answer Snell, if he wants to respond.

An aide to Schwarzenegger declined to comment.

Snell has established a recall website where he’ll soon have downloadable petitions for others to print out. He’s trying to recall a number of officials, including Republican Assemblyman Anthony Adams of Hesperia, who supported tax increases in the recent state budget deal.

Snell also gathered the needed 50 signatures for his notice of intent to circulate a petition to recall Adams. Adams also can respond by Monday.
