Are they as good as advertised? That was the question I asked Mike Jacot, the Santa Margarita coach, after his team frittered away a 14-point lead in the final four minutes and lost to St. Bonaventure, 15-14. Although St. Bonny was ranked No. 4 by The Times, it was ranked No. 1 by CalHiSports.com.

‘If they are,’ Jacot said, ‘then we aren’t as advertised. I know we’re not on the radar in a lot of people’s minds.’

Santa Margarita is ranked No. 19 by The Times. Though I voted St. Bonny ahead of Santa Margarita on my weekly ballot (No. 6 vs. No. 15), I thought the Eagles would win at home. They almost did.

Someone who is on a lot of people’s radar is Darrell Scott, the tailback at St. Bonaventure who transferred from Moorpark. But Jacot said he didn’t even watch film of the highly sought after, all-everything back.

‘I didn’t have to watch him,’ Jacot said. ‘I heard all the hype, I know he runs a 4.3 (second) 40, I know that he’s 6-2, 210 pounds and that he ran for 3,400 yards last season. I didn’t need to watch him.’

Santa Margarita held Scott to 76 yards on 17 carries.
