Beverly Hills public-address announcer Len Mitchell, a long-time math teacher, varsity softball and sophomore boys’ basketball coach at the school, will be making a trip down to the stadium sidelines before each game this season to check on basics like rosters and records of the teams involved.

He had no trouble, however, with citing each side’s standing before Friday’s season opener between Long Beach Cabrillo and Beverly Hills.

‘Both teams come in tonight undefeated,’ he said, drawing a chuckles from the crowd.

After the game, of course, that was no longer the case, as Cabrillo defeated Beverly Hills, 6-2.
