Sophomore Daniel Torres will start at quarterback for Carson when the Colts open their season Friday against Grandview (Colo.) at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Coach Mike Christensen, who confirmed Torres’ start, said, ‘He’s a good athlete, intelligent and mature. He also adds a dimension with his ability to scramble, something we haven’t had for awhile. I liked what he did in the scrimmage against Taft.’

Incumbent starting quarterback Dominique Blackman, a senior, is being held out of the opener for violation of team rules.

Christensen said Blackman is still with the team, but there is no timetable for his return to action.

‘He has to exhibit that he can adhere to the standards we have as a team,’ Christensen said. ‘As long as the effort is there to do that, the rest of the other stuff will take care of itself.’
